2007... ch ch ch changes

I said things would be a bit different in the New Year and what better way to start than a new banner?  The new banner was a collective creation between Meshee, Mindy & Myself...

Duane you ask, what other changes to have in store for us?  I'm
so glad you asked.

A few months ago I was chatting with my buddy Dr. Mary of lovely Ft Collins Colorado and asked if she still read The Zinful. Her reply? Not really, it's just not for me.   Slightly miffed, I asked her why.  She made a couple of valid points...  I had told her that the blog would be an educational blog. A place to teach "neu foodies" about wine, how to shop for wine, cooking, what kind of cookware she should buy to make these fabulous new dishes (since all of her cookware is cheap stuff from garage sales) and last but not least, recipes for people who work six days a week and don't have the time for "event" cooking.

With that in mind I invented a new phrase for great food for the working people...  "Easy Fru". Just because it's quick doesn't mean it has to be bland or from the microwave.. . In the coming days, weeks and months you'll see all of those changes and more at The Zinful.   A little something for everyone is my hope.

Fifteen (15) Seconds of Fame

I heard from a friend that Zinfully Delicious received a small blurb in the Sunday edition of the hometown Paper. It took a little bit of  searching on line.... Our moment in the Sun.

A site to behold

Zinfully Delicious is a pictures and recipes blog by local foodies Bruno and Duane. Wine, breads, desserts and St. Louis restaurants are recurring themes. Although it was started just this year Zinfully Delicious seems to be on a roll. A soft, warm, doughy roll: www.zinfullydelicious.com.

Very cute. Not sure who we have to thank for the the publicity. So, I'll just say Thank You.

Yes, it's only been a year but you can expect some
major changes in the months ahead. The Z.D. will look very, very different after the new year.

The Return

I'm Back.. :-)

Since medical stuff is not all that appetizing I did a post about what was going on over @ So Damn Charming. Thanks to Barbra & Riana for their kind thoughts.

I'm off to the kitchen to finish my bread for World Bread Day

News of Note

Duane is presently dealing with medical issues and will not be blogging until further notice.  However,  the ever capable Bruno will pick up the slack as he did during the recent hell Duane likes to call "moving".

Tutti Fruitti

I was going to post this recipe last week but my life

(and power) was knocked out of sync by the huge storm

that rolled through St. Louis on July 19th! My power has

finally been restored and I'm in the process of getting back

to my routine as well as repairing all the storm damage to

my house. I count my blessings because the tree that fell

through my fence could have fallen on me as I was chasing

my patio umbrella around the yard!! Next time, the umbrella

dies alone....

On to the recipe...

This recipe is so good, easy and refreshing it would be a

pity not to share it, especially while berry season is at its

peak! This is from my mom's recipe archives. She called it

tutti fruitti, but when I took it to the Bastille Day party I went

to, these English people were calling it a trifle. To me, it was

more than a trifle, plus I like the name tutti fruitti better!!

I didn't realize it until I was at my friend's house, but if you

categorize the ladyfingers and creme as white, this dessert

encompassed all the colors of the French flag. Perfect to

celebrate Bastille Day!

Call it what you like, it will always be tutti fruitti to me!!

Ingredients

for creme anglaise:

1 quart half and half

1 cup sugar

8 egg yolks

1 vanilla bean - split, seeds scraped

remaining ingredients:

1 pint strawberries - quartered

1 pint raspberries

1 pint blackberries

1 pint blueberries

24 ladyfingers

Procedure

for creme:

1) In medium saucepan, heat half + half, vanilla bean

and seeds gently to a simmer, then turn off heat.

2) In medium size mixing bowl combine egg yolks

and sugar and beat together until pale yellow.

3) Remove vanilla bean then beat 2 tablespoons of

the warm half + half into the egg mixture (do this

slowly to avoid curdling the eggs), then beat in the

remaining half + half little by little.

4) Place bowl over a pot of simmering water and cook over

a gentle heat, stirring constantly, until the mixture coats

the back of a spoon (do not let temperature exceed 170

degrees or mixture will start to curdle).

5) Cool in an ice bath.

Assemblage

1) Set aside a small amount of each berry for garnishing top

of dessert (see photo).

2) In a large, clear glass bowl, layer berries and

ladyfingers, starting w/ one of your berry choices,

then a layer of ladyfingers, then berries (alternating

color and choice of berries between layers), then ladyfingers,

then berries until you are almost to the top of your bowl.

Save enough room at the top for a final layer of ladyfingers,

then garnish the top w/ a row of each type of berry used.

3) Cover dessert and creme w/ plastic wrap and place in fridge.

4) One hour before serving, pour creme anglaise into dessert,

cover, and return to fridge.

5) When it's dessert time, remove from fridge, uncover and

have at it!

Vive la Tutti Fruitti and Bon Appetit!!

Edison's Folly

Well, that thing we call electricity has been the bane of life at the homes of both Mr Bruno and myself. After the hellacious storms Wednesday night... Power was out from Wednesday night until this afternoon(Sunday)  & Bruno is still without power plus his house received  some serious storm damage. Everyone seems to have survived the storms intact although a little lighter after sweating it out in 115  heat with out A.C.
My thoughts go out to the over two hundred thousand still without power.
(Including my parents, who will not leave their house)

  More soon...

Spring has sprung in my world and it can
only mean two errrr three things....

It's Birthday season for those of us born
under the sign of the Bull and it's time
to Grill.
Preppynegro2
So, I'd be remiss if I didn't show off the
awesome argyle apron Mindy made for my
Birthday & me doing the veggies on my grill.

(I'll do a post on my secrets to veggie grilling
next week)

And yeah, Spring also means things fall &
go boom in your neighborhood. This is
the view from my driveway. All those wires
were
live & hot hence the Police tape.

Coming Soon...

Well, Things are finally starting to fall into place,
here in Zinfulville.  When I first envisioned a food

blog and spoke to Bruno about being a co-author.
The direction was one of inclusion...   A place where
people could share their favorite eateries, recipes
or anything epicurean. While my goals were lofty,
the practical application proved all-together different.
There have been so many promises of articles and
restaurant reviews that  it looked like we'd have too
much content.  Then reality reared it's ugly head.
You mean people say things they don't mean?
Yes Timmy, sad but true.

That was then, this is now...

May starts a new era. Not only do we have new and
exciting contributions but we also celebrate 50 years
of... 50 years of a character that can be summed up
in two words. "The Mayor". That's right, May rings in
the 50th Birthday of co-author and reluctant bachelor
Bruno.
